“When Are You Coming Home” (1969). As I recall, I was spending the weekend in Santa Cruz with my older brothers and his friends. They all went out and left me behind. It was raining cats and dogs. I felt alone, waiting for them to return. My guitar was there. I picked it up and started playing.

I was a freshman in college (I never made it past sophomore year). I was spending the weekend in Santa Cruz with my older brother and his friends. They all went out and left me behind. It was raining cats and dogs. Alone, waiting for them to return, I picked up my guitar and started playing. That’s how I wrote songs back then and for a number of years to come. This has withstood the test of time. I still perform it.

Here Comes The Sign Again

1970

I was raised Catholic and had 12 years of parochial education. I am not a believer and wasn’t when I wrote this. But the imprint of my upbringing appears in many of my songs. I respect faith when it inspires service and mercy. As well as the emotion belief triggers (“Jesus, help a lonesome man”). I was a rebellious hippie challenging and mocking straight society (“Daddy’s playing hangman. Mama’s runnin’ naked through the yard”). But the warning/promise “here comes the sign again” (the Second Coming) and the third Jesus verse belie that rebellion. It’s complicated.
